You’ll need these ingredients for the Mojito cocktail
- Fresh mint leaves
- 2 limes
- 2 tablespoons of cane sugar or sugar syrup
- Ice cubes
- White rum
- Sparkling water or soda water

How to make a Mojito
Step 1: Make the sugar syrup (optional)
If you want to use sugar syrup instead of cane sugar, it’s best to make it in advance. Sugar syrup is a mixture of sugar and water that you can use as a sweetener in cocktails. To make sugar syrup, mix 1 part sugar with 1 part water in a small saucepan and heat it until the sugar has completely dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool before using it.
Step 2: Prepare the mint leaves
Remove the mint leaves from the sprigs and wash them gently under the tap. Drain the mint leaves thoroughly, then place them in a large glass or cocktail shaker.
Step 3: Add the cane sugar or sugar syrup
Add 2 tablespoons of cane sugar or sugar syrup to the mint leaves. Do not use ordinary granulated sugar, as it does not dissolve properly and may affect the texture of the cocktail.
Step 4: Squeeze the limes
Cut the limes in half and squeeze the juice over the mint leaves and the sugar. Stir the mixture well with a spoon.
Step 5: Add the rum
Add 50 ml of white rum to the mixture. Stir well once more.
Step 6: Add the ice cubes
Add a handful of ice cubes to the mixture. The more ice cubes you add, the longer the cocktail will stay cold. Give it another good stir.
Step 7: Add the sparkling water or soda water
Fill the glass or cocktail shaker to the brim with sparkling water or soda water. Give it another good stir.
Step 8: Garnish the Mojito
Garnish the Mojito with a sprig of mint and a slice of lime. You can also add a straw if you like. We always do.

How do you make the perfect Mojito?
Our cocktail shakers make the perfect Mojito thanks to the following tips:
- Always use fresh mint leaves.
Dried mint leaves do not have the same flavour and texture as fresh leaves.
- Do not use ordinary granulated sugar; use cane sugar or sugar syrup instead.
Ordinary granulated sugar does not dissolve well and can affect the texture of the cocktail. Furthermore, cane sugar has a more subtle flavour that complements the other ingredients better.
- Try different types of rum to find out which flavour best suits your personal taste.
White rum is the traditional choice for a Mojito, but you can also experiment with dark rum or even golden rum.
- Would you like to make the mint flavour even stronger?
Then gently rub the sprig of mint along the rim of the glass before adding it to the cocktail.
- It is important to stir the Mojito thoroughly so that the sugar dissolves properly and all the flavours blend well.
Use a spoon to stir the mixture thoroughly.
- For a bit of extra kick, you can add a few slices of chilli to the cocktail.
This gives the Mojito a zesty kick that goes perfectly with the fresh taste of the mint and the tang of the lime.
- For an alcohol-free version of the Mojito, you can leave out the rum and add extra mint and lime instead.
Replace the rum with soda water or sparkling water and you’ll have a lovely, refreshing non-alcoholic drink.
- Serve the Mojito in a tall glass with plenty of ice.
This keeps the cocktail nice and cold and refreshing, which goes perfectly with the flavour of the mint and lime.
- Finally, have a go!
Experiment with the proportions of the ingredients and discover which flavours best suit your personal taste. For example, add more lime for an extra tangy flavour, or use less sugar for a less sweet cocktail.
With these tips, you can make the perfect Mojito in no time at all. Enjoy it on a warm summer’s evening on the terrace or simply at home on the sofa. You’ll feel as though you’re in a tropical paradise for a moment. How lovely!
