Ube Matcha: our new coffee speciality

4 mins’ read time

The latest trend from South-East Asia is now on our menu. Two layers in a single glass, a 100% natural colour. Ube is still a rare sight at Dutch events. That’s precisely why the combination with purple catches the eye at the bar.

Why Ube?

  • 100% natural colour The purple colour comes from the tuber itself. It’s not a colouring agent from a bottle.
  • Perfect with matcha Purple and green in a single glass, and those layers remain distinct right down to the last sip.
  • Also known as Ube Latte With a shot of espresso, Ube works exactly the same way. Your coffee drinkers can still enjoy it too.
  • Made to be photographed The barista finishes off the top layer with latte art. That’s when the mobile phones start appearing.

A tuber from South-East Asia, no colouring

Ube is a purple tuber from South-East Asia. There, it has been used in cakes, ice cream and drinks for generations. Here, that flavour has only just started to catch on: at Dutch events, Ube is still a rare sight. So there’s a good chance your guests have never tried it before.

Our barista builds it up in layers, and they stay in place. Purple against green, or purple against coffee brown, in a tall glass. We finish off the top layer with latte art. That’s when the phones start coming out.

Ube goes well with any coffee or matchabar

A matcha event?

Ube Matcha. Purple against green, whisked on the spot with a bamboo whisk.

A coffee event?

Ube Latte. Purple under a shot of espresso, topped with latte art.

Summer event?

Iced Ube Matcha or Latte. Both served over ice, in a tall glass so the layers are visible.

Winter event?

Served warm. Indoors and in autumn, the layers in the glass remain just as clearly visible.

Business event?

Everyone’s wondering where that purple drink comes from. They’ll come and find you at your stand all by themselves.

Just because you can?

Fair enough. You don’t need a reason to enjoy a glass of purple wine.

Made live in front of your guests

Ube isn’t limited to matcha. It works just as well with a shot of espresso, and then it’s called an Ube Latte. That’s handy, as your guests have different tastes. The coffee drinkers who don’t fancy matcha can still join in.

Our barista whips up every matcha drink right there in front of you. You can really taste the difference: it’s creamy rather than grainy. You can choose your own milk – coconut, oat or cow’s milk – and everything is alcohol-free.

Would you like to feature your brand? If so, we’ll transform the bar to match your corporate identity, provide cups with your logo, and the coffee printer will print your logo or a QR code onto the milk foam.

Frequently Asked questions

How much does it cost?
Our Matcha bar is available from €750. Please enquire about the options for adding Ube to the menu.
Which bar can Ube stand on?
All three. The Matcha bar is compact, measuring around 1.65 metres, and the baristas sit alongside it. A standard 230V power socket is sufficient, and you don’t need a water connection. At the mobile coffee bar, the Ube Latte is served alongside espresso and cappuccino. The iced coffee bar serves the iced versions.
Can my logo be put on the drink?
Yes. The coffee printer prints your logo or a QR code onto the milk foam in three seconds per cup. The bar can also be styled to match your corporate identity, with cups featuring your logo.
Where does Ube come from?
It comes from South-East Asia, where the purple tuber has long been used in cakes, ice cream and drinks. That flavour has made its way over to the West, but at Dutch events, ube is still a rare sight.
Can Ube be made with coffee instead of matcha?
Yes. Ube works just as well with a shot of espresso as it does with matcha. On the menu, it’s called an Ube Latte. We usually include both options on the menu, so your guests can choose for themselves.
Is it served hot or cold?
Either is fine. Served warm indoors or in the autumn, or iced at a summer drinks party or in a packed venue. The layers in the glass remain visible in both versions.
What does Ube Matcha taste like?
Similar to matcha, but with a rounder flavour. The ube takes away the raw, grassy edge of green tea. Guests who usually find matcha too bitter tend to finish this one.
Can it be made with plant-based milk?
Yes. Coconut milk and oat milk are always available behind the bar, alongside cow’s milk. Your guest chooses when ordering.
Does it contain caffeine?
Yes, from the matcha. Matcha is finely ground green tea where you drink the whole leaf. There’s no caffeine in the Ube itself; in the Ube Latte, it comes from the espresso.
How many drinks do you make per hour?
Around 65 per hour per barista, as each matcha is freshly whisked. For larger groups, we bring in extra baristas to keep waiting times short.
